Music has been around much longer than we have been, even longer than our homes have been built. Over the years different artists have given their perception on a genre through their music but one thing will always remain the same. There will always be different people interested in many different genres. Some will also utilize music as a coping method to deal with stress. Discussed in the article "Music as Medicine", lullabies are now being played in some NICU's to calm the babies, instead of the beeping and hissing noises of the lifesaving equipment.

Researchers at Beth Israel Medical Center's Louis Armstrong Center for Music and Medicine conducted a study with 272 premature babies in the NICU. They played different types of instruments such as a round drum from the Remo drum company, and a gato box. These instruments were very interesting as they copied the sound of the mother’s womb and the sounds of their heartbeats. The researchers found these instruments actually slowed the babies heart rates and calmed them down, however singing was found to be the most effective (Qtd. Novotney Para.1 and 2).

Music certainly has always been used for stress management but is now being used in a different method to heal others. Sound frequencies are now being used to help patients with physical issues. Psychologist Daniel J. Levitin, PhD, who studies the neuroscience of music at McGill University in Montreal has been one of the first to utilize this new discovery (Qtd. Novotney Para. 5).
