In the article, “6 Types of Music College Students Love Listening to While Studying”, the author Alexandra Brown reinforces the fact that not only do college students love listening to music, but different genres affect others differently. As well as reminding the audience that college students are always listening to music and this is most likely to relieve their current stressors (Brown Paragraph 1). To begin, classical music is preferred by some students to calm them down and help them to better focus on the topic at hand. This is recommended since there are no words, and some students may find spoken words distracting while concentrating on studying (Brown Paragraph 2). Secondly, hip hop or rap is another popular genre since it offers students with a motivated feeling, polar opposite to the effect of classical music (Brown Paragraph 3). Thirdly, electronic music is known as the medium between classical and hip hop or rap. This genre also does not include lyrics, however offers a motivating atmosphere through the beats and tempos (Brown Paragraph 4).

Furthermore, rock or light rock are also preferred genres among college students. Due to the wide array of rock bands, depending on a student’s current artist selection, the student may be in a calmed state, or in a motivated state because of their music. Such varieties include light rock, classic rock, or heavy rock, depending on the student’s preference. All varieties of the genre respectively holding their own benefits (Brown Paragraph 5). Another popular genre is EDM, Electronic Dance Music, since it is slightly more intense than electronic. EDM has shown strong gains in popularity among the younger generation in the past years, and continues to grow in popularity. EDM is considered the most effective among college students when attempting to stay awake and alert while studying and completing assignments (Brown Paragraph 6). Lastly, top hits are a favorite of college students since this genre includes a variety of artists and different styles of music. The top hits are the most popular songs out on the radio at a given time. This is preferred of college students since it adds background noise to their current studying situation when it is difficult for the student to focus in complete silence. The top hits are a collective favor among many, not just college students (Brown Paragraph 7). The author Alexandra Brown is a credible source since she has received positive reviews from her article and research. Another reason her article is an important source is since this article appeals to a younger generation, which this source analysis has been written to target, college students. This article includes diversity of genres which strengthens the research information presented.
