Paragraph 2
In the article, “Coping with Stress: The Effectiveness of Different Types of Music”, the authors Elise Labbé, et al, explore how young people are using music to manage negative emotions and stress. “Music is an important aspect of youth culture and most young people listen to music for a variety of reasons” (Trzcinski 1994, Qtd Labbé, et al, Paragraph 1). It is found that young people will use music to relax and to relieve tensions, especially in this ever-changing world. Studies have found that students who are listening to classical music, result in positive emotions and increases in parasympathetic nervous system arousal (Qtd Labbé, et al, Paragraph 1). They observed the participants in the study and found the students who listened to classical music were in fact relaxed and self-selecting the music choice contributed to the students’ level of relaxation (Labbé, et al, Paragraph 1). By allowing the student to select the music choice gives them some control over the experimental situation. Research within health psychology has found perceived control is an important factor to reduce stress response (Qtd Labbé, et al, Paragraph 2).
Furthermore, another study performed utilized seven violent songs and eight non-violent songs in an experiment, then students completed tasks to measure their aggression levels. The results found that students who listened to the violent songs rather than non-violent songs portrayed higher levels of aggression, even when not provoked, however did not account for physiological arousal (Labbé, et al, Paragraph 3). The different effects of violent versus non-violent music in students and their reactions have not been adequately tested and is in need of further research. The studies in this article concluded that students who listen to classical music, or music of their choice, result in significant reductions in anger, anxiety, and sympathetic nervous system arousal, as well as increases in feelings of relaxation, compared to those who listen to violent music. Secondly, it is hypothesized that there is a strong correlation between self-selected and classical music with some persons use of music for relaxation (Labbé, et al, Paragraph 5). The authors Elise Labbé, et al, are a credible source since the article has been reviewed and compiled by several credible authors. These authors of this article are respected researchers, some with advanced degrees in their field of study. This article has been a credible source since it evaluates the effects of music and factual information.
